“Kako no Kage - Shadows of the Past” is my senior capstone project
a multimedia installation exhibit that explores the legacy of Japanese
American incarceration during World War II, with a personal focus on my
own family’s history. Blending visual storytelling, archival research, and lived
memory, the exhibit invites viewers to reflect on this overlooked chapter of
American history and its lasting impact on identity, resilience, and justice.
Floor Plan of the Gallery Space: Exhibit Timeline 2 weeks.
Less than 3 months of planning before executing the final product, the installation had a little over a week to set everything in place
Moodboard- Inspiration, Concept, Logo Exploration and Planning
I created an immersive environment using scenic painting and fabrication techniques. The installation featured freehand pictorial painting, aging and distressing methods, and dimensional shading across wood, plastic, and mixed substrates. Through layered brushwork, color mixing, and highlighting, I transformed both flat and three-dimensional surfaces to create realistic textures, depth, and environmental storytelling.
